An Extraordinary Result in 2010 Bakels NZ Supreme Pie Awards.
It's 'four times a winner' for Pat Lam. Pat Lam of Gold Star Patrick's Pies Bakery, Tauranga has achieved the unique feat of winning the Bakels Supreme Pie Award for the fourth time.
The winning pie was Bacon and Egg.
His other 'Supreme' victories were in 2003 with Mince & Cheese and 2004 and 2009 with Gourmet Meat.
Chief Judge, Dennis Kirkpatrick, said "to take out this coveted award four times is quite exceptional. A completely different configuration of judges from other years and he does it again. Testimony to an outstanding baker".
2010 was a Block Buster year for the Bakels Supreme Pie contest with a record 4,336 Pies entered from 386 Bakeries, which adds even greater gravitas to Pat Lam's victory. He also took a Silver in Gourmet Fruit and a Bronze in Gourmet Meat.
2010 was a bit of a Lam 'do'. Pat's brother, Lam Ho, from Paetiki Bakery, Taupo, took Gold in both Chicken & Vegetable and Gourmet Meat. And Pat's other brother, Mark, from Owhata Lam Pie Bakery, Rotorua, took a Bronze in Mince & Cheese, while Pat's sister in law, Fiona Duong of Koutu Bakery, Rotorua took a Gold in Mince & Gravy and Bronze in Chicken & Vegetables.
70% of the entries were from Asian Bakeries. This is reflected in the results where Asian Bakeries won 80% of the awards.
The New Zealand Pie Market is now worth in excess of $145 million. Kiwis eat millions of Pies a year.
The Supreme Pie Award Winners will be announced at a dinner at the Rendezvous Hotel, tonight, Tuesday 27 July. Winning bakers, prominent foodies and a very large media contingent will be in attendance.
The theme of the evening is Great Pie Moments in Film. The MC is Paul Holmes.
Over the past 14 years, the Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards have grown to become the premier event on the New Zealand baking calendar. Last year there was a record number of entries from all over New Zealand proving that these awards are still growing in popularity.
The ongoing media support for winners ensures that today, every pie-loving New Zealander knows that a Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Award winning pie is simply the best pie you can buy.
